By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Unsatisfied with the Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL), Western Ballaz head coach Karim Juan has decided to step down.

“Just tired of the sub par administration of the league and the new model that managers run the league,” Juan told Breaking Belize News,

“Too much conflict of interest. It’s been three weeks and we still have not gotten any response about our game versus Orange Walk. Too much collusion and undermining.”

Cayo defeated the Orange Walk Running Rebels on Saturday, March 9, at the Orange Walk Multi-Purpose Center just before the Orange Walk Running Rebels withdrew from the BEBL, but instead of a 2-3 record now, Western Ballaz are down to 1-3. (After the Orange Walk game, they lost to the Belmopan Trojans on March 23.)

“Orange Walk withdrew so our win was nullified,” Juan explained.

That meant that instead of four games, Cayo, at the time, had only played three games and not four due to the nullification. Considering that final rosters weren’t due until the fourth game, the Western Ballaz then made a move to add a couple of Running Rebels players since they had become free due to the Northern team’s withdrawal.

“We wanted to add two Orange Walk players and the Commissioner ruled no. We appealed and are still waiting on a response.

“It’s been three weeks,” Juan said.

So for now, the Western Ballaz, who are still hopeful of making the playoffs, are left without their head coach and possibly their assistant coach as well. From what we understand, assistant head coach Douglas Smith would also be leaving.

The Western Ballaz management are still to make an announcement on the matter though word has it that experienced American coach Bernie Tarr is taking over..
